- ➤ Avelo Airlines announced Tuesday night that it is closing its Wilmington base at the airport and cutting service to 11 destinations while continuing flights to Nashville, New Haven, Tampa, and Washington & DC/Baltimore. - ➤ Wilmington offers a busy weekend of cultural events (a touring comic, a rock musical, live music shows and a lantern ceremony) at local venues from today through Sunday. Wilmington Star-News

- ➤ Cape Fear Community College will host a Financial Aid and FAFSA Night on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Room 212 (Union Station) where trained professionals will help students complete the FAFSA, prepare documents, and learn about scholarship opportunities. WECT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees will plant over 100 trees in Wilmington’s Northside neighborhood starting Jan. 10 at 9 a.m. at Portia Hines Park + community volunteers, neighbors, city staff and local leaders will help expand urban canopy to reduce heat and improve air quality. FOX Wilmington

- ➤ Wilmington officials are seeking a partner to build a low or no barrier homeless shelter that could house 30 to 40 people at a site near bus routes and services. The city will also conduct a summer point-in-time count to guide future efforts. WHQR

- ➤ Residents enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans are encouraged to review their options through March 31 by contacting New Hanover County SHIIP—call 910-798-6442—to schedule a free appointment. The Open Enrollment Period lets them choose a different plan or return to Original Medicare. New Hanover County
- ➤ State health officials are monitoring a surge in flu cases linked to the H3N2 *subclade K* variant and increased measles risks by coordinating with local health departments. They urge residents to get vaccinated and practice proper hygiene to protect the community. WECT
