COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Special Olympics of New Hanover County will host its 22nd annual Polar Plunge (at the Kure Beach Pavilion) on Saturday, Feb. 21 starting at 11 a.m. to raise $150,000 for its sports programs.  WWAY
  • New Hanover County Main Library opened its doors Monday at 230 Grace Street in downtown Wilmington following a ribbon cutting ceremony with county officials — work on the adjacent Cape Fear Museum continues with its opening set for summer.  New Hanover County
  • In the 1990s, Wilmington planners proposed an 850-acre mixed-use development along South 17th Street Extension that local Pine Valley residents opposed as overdevelopment & risked ruining neighborhood character. Today, the area is home to offices, housing, assisted living facilities, the Cameron Art Museum & the Pointe at Barclay shopping center.  Wilmington Star-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In 2025, Wilmington introduced 12 new bars and breweries, with venues in downtown, Hampstead, and Leland. The locations serve craft cocktails, offer live music and games + provide fresh choices for nightlife and dining.  Wilmington Star-News
  • A new business is planned for opening at 2020 Capital Drive at Murrayville Station north of Wilmington, joining established businesses such as Harvey’s Wholesale Distributors and Indian Spring Water Company that already serve the area.  Wilmington Star-News

  • A recent article details how Wilmington parks were named after local leaders and historic figures (such as Archie Blue and Sam Bowens) to honor contributions from early settlers to modern advocates.  Wilmington Star-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Orangetheory Fitness offers a $2 per day membership from Dec. 26 until Jan. 31 to help anyone start their 2026 fitness journey in Wilmington. The program blends strength training & cardio so all fitness levels can get moving.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Port City Daily’s Food Truck Tracker shows mobile food schedules running Friday to Friday this week in Wilmington. The schedule lists stops like Fly’n Phil’e at Museum of Beer & Art and Donut Bus at Prosperity Motorplex (schedules are subject to weather conditions).  Port City Daily
