COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After opening Sunday night for those facing sub-30° temperatures, Wilmington’s Warming Shelter at 401 Grace St. will serve up to 125 people tonight from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m., with rules prohibiting drugs, weapons, and alcohol. Volunteers and donations are welcome.  WECT
  • After nearly 50 years of difficulty reaching their ancestors' burial site, the McIntyre family can now visit by truck thanks to New Hanover County's help — a change after many failed attempts. They plan to continue researching unmarked graves with county support.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Andi Creech was crowned Miss Wilmington and Olivia Lancaster was named Teen Miss Wilmington at the Saturday evening Pageant Show held at the Scottish Rite Temple — a competition celebrating young women's leadership, service, and community dedication.  WWAY
  • CAM postponed its floating lantern ceremony due to weather concerns, and a new date will be announced later. The museum said its youth concert remains scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. with $5 admission.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, Alliance for Cape Fear Trees planted over 100 native trees at Portia Hines Park in the Northside Neighborhood with volunteers and local gardening groups at 9 a.m. — the organization will plant trees with Glow Academy on January 30.  WWAY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ongoing construction is adding new homes, businesses and offices along South 17th Street in Wilmington (including retail spots like The Pointe 14 movie theatres and Novant Health offices) to boost the area's growth; work began before Dec. 11 and continues today.  Wilmington Star-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Wilmington area athletes posted standout high school sports performances last week — the StarNews Athlete of the Week Poll now includes 28 nominees with votes accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, and fans may vote as many times as they like.  Wilmington Star-News
