COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jose Castro & Maria Aguinada, a Delco couple, won a $200,000 top prize from a $5 scratch ticket at Smoker Friendly on Reed Road in Leland. They split the prize after tax deductions on Jan. 8, with each receiving $72,011 while lottery proceeds fund school grants.  WECT
  • Wilmington’s annual MLK parade returns on Monday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. on Third Street with former WNBA player Tamara ‘Ty’ Young as Grand Marshal — and additional events including a YWCA talk, MLK Fun Day, and a church service are planned to honor Dr. King.  Wilmington Star-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews responded to a gas leak at Wilmington International Airport Monday morning (triggered by a construction mishap) and lifted a temporary pedestrian ban when no flights were affected as Piedmont Natural Gas arrived on scene.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • RJ Decker, a new network TV series shot in Wilmington, released its first trailer on Jan. 12 at 9:38 a.m. The series, filmed since summer 2025 with scenes at local spots, will air later this year on ABC + Hulu.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is set to close soon for up to three years as it undergoes a $75 million expansion that will add new exhibits and a 400,000-gallon sand tiger shark habitat, and it will continue serving visitors with a temporary exhibit at Independence Mall.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Wilmington began a $6 million improvement project last fall on a 2.6-mile stretch of Wrightsville Avenue to add new sidewalks, ADA crosswalks, signalized crossings at College Road and Hawthorne Drive, and a roundabout at Wallace Avenue. The work is expected to finish within a year.  WECT
  • Cape Fear Public Utility Authority issued a boil water advisory for Cheyenne Trail and Apache Trail on Monday — crews are repairing a water main leak and residents must boil water for drinking, teeth, food, and pet use.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • In January, the American Red Cross in Wilmington is urging residents to donate blood by Jan. 25 to save lives and win a Super Bowl trip for two in San Francisco+ Darren Allison said first-time donors make a big difference as winter slows donations.  WECT
