COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A warming shelter opened at 401 Grace Street as temperatures dropped below freezing, offering overnight housing for the homeless until Wednesday morning.  WECT
  • The community honored MLK with a Sunday morning service at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church and today's parade along 3rd Street led by former WNBA player Tamera Young. Additional events include a Family Fun Day at the MLK Community Center and an MLK Breakfast at the Wilmington Convention Center on Saturday (Jan. 24).  WWAY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After serving Leland since 1981, Family Dollar at Clairmont Shopping Center will close its doors at the end of February when its lease expires. Nearby stores in Leland and Wilmington will remain open.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Carolina law makes it illegal to read texts or emails when driving, even at a red light; drivers face a $100 fine plus court costs, although exceptions apply for parked vehicles and authorized emergency personnel.  Wilmington Star-News

  • The UNCW men's team won against Campbell on Saturday at Trask Coliseum for their seventh straight win — while the women lost to Elon on Friday and Drexel on Sunday. Coaches praised players for stepping up amid roster changes.  WWAY
