- ➤ With colder weather approaching, Warming Shelter ILM will open nightly at Grace United Methodist Church until Jan. 31 to provide food, cots, and blankets for those without homes; volunteer David Mallick asks the community to support needed donations (in funds or supplies). WWAY
- ➤ A portion of MLK Jr. Parkway was closed from N. Kerr Avenue to N 23rd Street on Sunday, Jan. 25 due to icy conditions. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes as traffic remained heavy. WECT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Freezing rain on Sunday left a thin ice coating on cars and roads, and officials urged residents to drive carefully. Today, the National Weather Service forecasts showers before 7 a.m. with clearing skies later and warns that colder temperatures will return later this week. Wilmington Star-News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A 1950s hospital report found Wilmington’s James Walker and Community hospitals had “C” sanitation grades and urged a 400-bed integrated facility. A Feb. 15 bond vote followed, leading to the 1967 opening of New Hanover Memorial Hospital (now Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center). Wilmington Star-News
