COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Female WPD officers will teach free self-defense classes next month at Hayes Lacewell Police and Fire Training Facility—sessions run on March 11, 12, 18, and 19 from 6 to 9 p.m, require all four parts, and offer limited spots for women 18 and older who pass a background check.  WECT
  • A Safe Place launched The Farm in New Hanover County for sex trafficking survivors to stay up to two years. The 11-acre facility has three cottages for individual survivors, pregnant women and families, while residents work on the farm to earn income — county leaders and neighbors attended the ribbon cutting.  WECT
  • The Moores Creek Battleground Association seeks volunteers to support the First in Freedom Festival celebrating America’s 250th anniversary from Feb. 26 to 28 at Moores Creek National Battlefield in Currie. Volunteers can pick shifts (logistics, book signings, visitor guidance).  WECT
  • Mustaches for Kids will award $110,000 in grants to 14 local children’s charities during Stachegiving Day of its 2025 mustache season & distribute gifts ranging from $2,500 to $12,500. The event is set for Thursday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at MegaCorp Logistics, 1011 Ashes Drive.  WECT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A family and their pets escaped an overnight house fire on Oneida Lake Road in New Hanover County, with smoke detectors alerting them and fire crews arriving shortly after midnight while officials urge checking detectors and switching batteries every six months.  FOX Wilmington

  • Duke Energy in Wilmington warns customers that messages claiming scheduled rolling outages by zip code are scams and advises them to contact the company directly. Customers should not click on unknown links or download attachments.  Port City Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • At The Eagle's Dare on North Third Street, nominations for the 13th annual Wilmington Theater Awards were announced Jan. 28 — Opera House Theatre Co. led with 31 nods. Winners will be announced March 25 at Thalian Hall.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Big Dawg Theatre Company will present Nassim Soleimanpour’s White Rabbit Red Rabbit at Thalian Hall next month. The production runs Feb. 12–15 and Feb. 19–22 (7:30 p.m. evenings, 3 p.m. Sunday matinees) with a different actor each night.  Port City Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College will hold a panel discussion series to celebrate America's 250th birthday and is seeking veterans (World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and modern conflicts) to share their stories; the panels are scheduled for April 6, April 7, and April 8.  Port City Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington residents should prepare for a winter storm expected to bring snow starting Friday evening through Sunday—hazardous roads and disruptions to infrastructure may occur amid very cold temperatures. Officials remain uncertain about precise amounts and timing.  Wilmington Star-News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Demolition began yesterday at North 17 Shopping Center on Market St to clear space for a planned five-story mixed-use building with 53 residential units and retail space. Quantum Real Estate LLC, which purchased the property last year, will redevelop the 1.59-acre site.  Wilmington Star-News
