COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Endowment provisionally approved a $7,750,000 grant to help the city acquire land for a community park, pending $1 million contributions from both the city and county and board approvals on Feb. 3 and Feb. 16. It also awarded $75,000 to support the 2026 SUN Bucks program for more than 15,000 children.  WWAY
  • Amid record-breaking cold, Cape Fear nonprofits are adding shelter capacity to help local residents facing extreme weather. ILM’s pop-up warming shelter is open until Feb. 4 — Good Shepherd Center and The Healing Place are also expanding cots to serve more people.  WHQR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nominees for the 2026 Wilmington Theater Awards have been announced by the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County, with Opera House Theatre Co. earning the most nods + voting is open until Feb. 11; the awards ceremony will take place on March 25 at Thalian Hall.  Port City Daily
  • Li'l Friday brings a full slate of events for Wilmington this weekend. The CFCC International Film Festival runs free screenings at Cape Fear Community College through Feb. 4 while Shuler King performs standup at Dead Crow Comedy Room today (additional art, music, and cultural happenings follow through next week).  Port City Daily
  • The ACES Gallery now shows Randx Nieves’ new art exhibit, Transient Neighbors + Portraits of the Invisible, which opened Jan. 23. The exhibit is free, runs until Feb. 26, and is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 221 N. Front St., Suite 101.  WECT
  • Oscar-nominated films are screening at local theaters including Regal Mayfaire and Thalian Hall (featuring Arco and The Secret Agent) this weekend. Wintry weather with a rain/snow mix and lows in the teens may change outdoor plans.  Wilmington Star-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Winter storm watches are in effect for Wilmington from Friday night through Sunday with heavy snow expected on Saturday and dangerously low temperatures forecast. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities and prepare vehicles and pipes — safety tips from local weather services.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Endowment has provisionally approved a $7,750,000 grant to help preserve a green space for park use (pending Wilmington and New Hanover County raising matching funds). The city will review unnamed property on Feb. 3 while the county is expected to discuss cost-share on Feb. 16.  WHQR
