- ➤ Wilmington’s City Manager Becky Hawke is negotiating for 25 acres on Greenville Loop Road to create a park using a $7.7M grant from The Endowment. The project includes city funds and a county match (pending review on Feb. 16) with closing scheduled for Feb. 28. Port City Daily
- ➤ Registration is open for Carolina Beach's 4th annual Fancy Pants Croquet Soirée scheduled for April 19 at Mike Chappell Park — the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and supports the Carolina Beach Mural Project with live music, cocktails, croquet matches, and limited spectator tents. WWAY
- ➤ Boys and Girls Clubs of Southeastern NC announced two guest speakers for the 2026 Blue Door Gala. Phil Ford and Tyler Hansbrough will speak on April 25 at 5:20 p.m. at the Wilmington Convention Center (proceeds will support youth programs). WWAY
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Edward Teach Brewing will close in February after more than eight years, planning a final celebration with specials + a toast on Feb. 15. The brewery, which recently changed ownership and finished storm repair work, has been a local spot for first dates, trivia nights and friendships. WWAY
- ➤ Build-A-Bear Workshop will open at Independence Mall on Friday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. Community members can join a grand opening featuring a ribbon cutting with Bearemy the Mascot — the first guest will receive a free giant stuffed elephant and the first 25 guests a surprise gift. WWAY
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A network TV series called RJ Decker — filmed in Wilmington — will premiere Tuesday, Mar. 3 at 10 p.m. on ABC with streaming on Hulu starting Mar. 4. The show is based on a 1987 novel and features noted actors. Wilmington Star-News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Wilmington schools, community colleges and some government offices are closed or shifting to remote learning as a winter storm warning predicts 5 to 8 inches of snow from 1 a.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Sunday — officials in Cape Fear, Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties are updating schedules as conditions change. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The North Carolina Coastal Federation is asking commercial fishers to join its Lost Fishing Gear Recovery Project to collect abandoned crab pots during coastal water closures from January 1 to Jan. 31 and March 1 to 15 (applications are due by Feb. 15 and require a valid fishing license). WECT
- ➤ Fuquay-Varina plans to permanently divert 6.17 million gallons from the Cape Fear River to the Neuse River — a move that could lower flow and challenge Wilmington’s water treatment. Local officials warn that lower flows during droughts may boost pollution risks, and the NC DEQ accepts comments until April 1. WHQR
