COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Utility companies report that 772 residents in the Wilmington area and 2,192 residents in Brunswick County are without power today (cause unknown).  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • StarNews has opened the ballot for Student of the Week that will close at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5. High school principals, teachers and guidance counselors from local counties nominated students for their academic excellence such as Adaila Graham and Daniel Hernandez.  Wilmington Star-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Power companies in our area are urging customers to conserve energy as temperatures fall 10 to 20 degrees below normal today (a cold snap that raises the risk of outages) and officials warn that sustained subfreezing conditions may strain the grid further.  WECT
  • Residents in Cape Fear experienced a rare snowfall that fell late Saturday night, and many took walks and sledded on Sunday. Photos showed 4 inches of snow on porches and even a donkey with icicles in its fur, highlighting the unusual winter scene.  WWAY
  • A weekend winter storm brought up to 5.8 inches of snow to Wilmington International Airport and nearby areas, marking the 13th largest snowfall on record before ending early Feb. 1. Officials warned today that lingering cold could lead to icy roads and cancellations.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Battery Island, a 30-acre nesting site for thousands of shorebirds, is eroding due to boat wakes, storms, and sea-level rise. Audubon North Carolina is using a $135,000 grant to design living shorelines — a potential solution — as part of its plan to protect this vital habitat.  Wilmington Star-News
