COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feast Down East received a $5,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation—supporting its Fresh Bucks program that offers SNAP recipients matching dollars for fresh food purchases at its Local Motive Mobile Farmers’ Market in Burgaw.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The NC First in Freedom Festival will run from Feb. 21 to Feb. 28 in the Cape Fear region — featuring history events, battle commemorations at Moores Creek National Battlefield, and an appearance by Diana Gabaldon on Feb. 27.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Mraz is set to perform at Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center on Saturday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale for members today at 10 a.m. and for the public on Feb. 6 at 10 a.m.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College is hosting its fourth annual Health Science Career Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Daniels’ Hall on the fifth floor of Union Station downtown (attendees should bring resumes and dress professionally) to connect with local health employers.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees will plant 65 trees at Girls Leadership Academy in Wilmington to boost educational equity and environmental health + the project, supported by Cape Fear Garden Club, will use native species to reduce urban heat and attract pollinators.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council approved a $1 million investment on Tuesday to purchase 25 acres on Greenville Loop Road next to Bradley Creek Elementary School (pending matching funds from New Hanover County at a Feb. 16 meeting), with the park scheduled to open by 2031.  FOX Wilmington
  • The Holden Beach bridge closed on Sunday, Feb. 1 due to extreme weather conditions from a winter storm. Officials continue monitoring the situation — cautioning drivers about hazardous travel conditions.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local organizations are teaming up to offer a free CPR class at Earl Jackson Pool on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. The session covers adult hand-only CPR, full adult CPR, child and infant CPR and AED use.  WWAY
  • 80-year-old Natalie Sherwood has boosted her strength and confidence at her local gym after she began working out seven months ago in Wilmington. Trainer Vicki Maysack noted steady progress with weights and TRX workouts, and Natalie plans to add more cardio soon.  WECT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Restaurants in Wilmington are offering a range of Valentine’s Day dining experiences, from DIY boxes with six-course meals available Feb. 12-14 to prix fixe dinners with live music on Feb. 13-15 in spots like the Brooklyn Arts District and downtown; reservations are required for many specials.  Wilmington Star-News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In 2025, New Hanover County recorded 3,124 permits, with Wilmington leading in apartment approvals and a rise in commercial projects countywide. City council and county commissioners modified rezoning and special-use permit processes, and planning staff will present a comprehensive plan update on Feb. 16.  Port City Daily
