- ➤ Wilmington’s Warming Shelter will reopen Saturday, Feb. 7 to serve up to 125 overnight guests through Monday morning. Organizers request community food donations for a Super Bowl party this Sunday (donations dropped off at Grace United Methodist Church, 401 Grace St.). WWAY
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The Patriot ferry carrying passengers to Bald Head Island ran aground near the marina entrance on Feb. 5 at 1:48 p.m., and a Coast Guard rescue boat assisted over 100 passengers before service resumed from Deep Point Marina in Southport at 1:30 p.m. (the Coast Guard is investigating the incident). - ➤ On Thursday at nearly 7 a.m., Bald Head Island Ferry’s The Patriot ran aground near the harbor due to low tides and shifting currents from winter storms; rescue boats from the Coast Guard and Towboat US transported all 105 passengers and three crew members safely with no injuries reported. - ➤ Wilmington residents can order same-day delivery for last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts like flowers and sweets from DoorDash, which allows orders for restaurant food, groceries and retail items in their area and offers a DashPass membership at $10 per month for added savings. - ➤ The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher invites locals to vote online or in-person for new names for its Asian small-clawed otter triplets. Voting ends Feb. 19 at noon and offers three naming groups that highlight each pup's unique traits. Port City Daily

- ➤ Unique Places to Save has protected 1,040 acres in southern Brunswick County by recording a conservation easement on wetlands, Carolina bays and sand ridges today. The move connects nearby protected areas to safeguard rare habitats + help maintain water quality for local communities. WWAY

- ➤ Bald Head Island Village Council raised its legal fees budget to $200,000 to address concerns over the Wilmington Harbor Dredging Project. The council will review further legal costs at its retreat March 3 and 4 as it works to manage ongoing coastal challenges (village staff report). Port City Daily
- ➤ The Wilmington Police Department is set to reopen its Citizens Academy (Apr. 16, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.) at the Haynes/Lacewell Police and Fire Training Facility where officers will deliver K-9, tactical, and safety demos and showcase new virtual reality headsets. WECT
- ➤ After complaints about trash along Highway 17 in Leland, NCDOT said its contractor began cleaning the area last week and will resume once the snow is gone (the agency removed over 198,000 lbs of trash in Brunswick County over the past year). WWAY
