- ➤ The public can vote online to name the otter triplets born Dec. 5, 2025 at the Aquarium at Fort Fisher — the three all-male pups show different traits and Hong Kong ancestry; votes must be in by Thursday, Feb. 19. WWAY
- ➤ Wilmington’s famed diner founder Jimbo’s Breakfast & Lunch House lost its founder, James “Jimbo” Patsalos, who died Feb. 7 at age 91. A funeral is scheduled for Feb. 13 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and a remembrance event will take place Feb. 12 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Zora's Seafood Market & Kitchen and UNCW’s Aquaculture Program have teamed up to offer free weekly, farm-raised fish to families in need at the Castle Street market (a longstanding community fixture). Program operator Ryan Jankowski said the 20 available fish were claimed within 15 minutes during the program’s first week. WECT
- ➤ ACCESS of Wilmington is hosting town halls to plan a new indoor recreation center for people of all abilities; one session runs Thursday, Feb. 12 at the New Hanover County Public Library (Northeast Branch) and another runs Monday, March 9 at the Pine Valley Branch. WECT
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday around 11:45 a.m., fire crews from multiple counties fought a brush fire that burned nearly 25 acres and destroyed a storage shed on Wide Way in Navassa — no injuries were reported despite high winds threatening nearby structures. WECT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Children's Museum of Wilmington invites kids to join the Kids Olympics on Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. where they can earn medals by competing in activities such as a snowball toss, bobsled building race, and floor hockey. WWAY
- ➤ Straight No Chaser will perform its 2026 Beach Bash tour at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College on Saturday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale to members Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. and to the public Friday at 10:00 a.m. WWAY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new DMV office will open Monday at 25 Old River Rd. in Leland to help reduce wait times for driver's license services. It will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. using walk-ins only + appointments beginning in March. Port City Daily
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Wilmington's Bryan Sammons is back with the Tigers for camp after pitching in Japan last season. The 30-year-old pitcher signed a minor league deal with a potential $1.25 million bonus and is set to compete for a roster spot this season. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ The Brunswick County Special Olympics basketball team is training for the USA Games in Minnesota starting June + will raise funds at the Brunswick County Polar Plunge on Feb 21 in Oak Island to support their trip. FOX Wilmington
