BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Wilmington businesses recovered from a recent snowstorm as Super Bowl crowds filled restaurants and bars yesterday. The surge in customers marked a dramatic turnaround for local establishments.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Island Arts Council is hosting free healing art workshops for cancer survivors and visual art sessions for American Legion members on Pleasure Island through April. The council will hold the 'Rooted in History' exhibit at Fort Fisher Aug. 1–15 (featuring 100 local artists).  Port City Daily
  • Two Wilmington festivals—the 79-year Azalea Festival running April 8 to 12 with concerts, garden tours and a parade, and the new Feast Wilmington on March 28 to 29 featuring local chefs and breweries—are in USA Today’s 10Best poll with the public voting daily through March 2.  Port City Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a Tuesday night meeting, Pender County Board of Education approved Option 5 of the 2026-2027 school calendar with 174 instruction days starting Aug. 24 and ending June 2, and they passed a resolution asking the DMV to increase bus driver training to ease transportation delays.  WECT
  • UNCW broke ground on a new $71 million residence hall on campus last week. The building will house 540 beds in double and single rooms (featuring pod-style bathrooms, social spaces, and a two-story Quad Commons) and is expected to be finished by fall 2027.  WECT
  • UNCW broke ground on a new residence hall on campus on Friday, Feb. 6 — the facility will offer 540 beds, pod-style bathrooms and a two-story Quad Commons space. Construction costs about $71 million and is slated for completion by fall 2027.  FOX Wilmington
  • Cape Fear Community College will host an information session and tour of its Veterinary Medical Technology program from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 at its North Campus (NV building) to help prospective students learn about program requirements, curriculum, and career opportunities with a virtual option available 24/7.  WWAY
  • Fifty-eight institutions statewide, including Airlie Gardens, Cape Fear Museum of History and Science and Children's Museum of Wilmington in New Hanover County, received part of a 2.4 million dollars grant from the NC Science Museums Grant Program to boost STEM education for low-resource communities for the 2025-26 fiscal year.  FOX Wilmington
  • Special Pedals, a downtown nonprofit, trains neurodiverse adults in bicycle repair and retail at its shop on Red Cross. The organization also will host a fundraising event (Pedal to the Metal with Lifton with Kristen) at Flytrap featuring a 45-minute workout and red light therapy.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina sued the state for failing to manage its fisheries — a trial that began January 20 in Raleigh is ongoing and may change fishing rules for both recreational and commercial industries. A court decision could reshape management practices to protect public fish stocks.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Today, the NCDMVA launched its 'Unlock the Veteran and Milspouse Advantage' roadshow at the NC Biotechnology Center in Durham—aiming to boost veteran and military-spouse hiring statewide. Additional stops include Asheville in March, Winston-Salem in May, Charlotte in July, Greenville in September, and Wilmington in October.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Novant Health will host a virtual career event for Scotts Hill Medical Center where job seekers can learn about open positions and speak with recruiters and hiring leaders (offering direct access to immediate opportunities).  WECT

  • Local high school baseball fans can vote for the StarNews Preseason Baseball Player of the Year (23 nominees) until Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 11:59 p.m. The season begins Feb. 25 in Wilmington as new talents prepare for the field.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Fort Fisher Aquarium will host the 2026 Race for the Planet on Sunday, Apr. 19 in Battle Acre Park at Fort Fisher. Runners can join the 5K race and one-mile run — all proceeds will fund the aquarium’s conservation efforts.  WECT
