  • Capt'n Bill's Backyard Grill will mark its 34th anniversary on Saturday, March 7 with a charity volleyball tournament at its facility in Wilmington. Teams will check in (10:30 a.m.) as proceeds benefit Happy and Sunshine Pig Sanctuary.  WWAY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • An Indiana-based indoor golf company opens its first NC location in Shallotte mid-to-late March after delays from December. The venue at 4636 E. Coast Lane offers simulated golf, a full bar, food, and an outdoor patio (plus a putting green) for families.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr. will discuss the 250th anniversary of the 1776 Battle of Moores Creek Bridge on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at Main Library in Burgaw, with a free reception from 5 to 6 p.m. at Dallas Herring Library Annex— part of First in Freedom Festival.  Port City Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, county commissioners will vote to add $1 million to help the city buy a new park on Greenville Loop Road; the city secured 25 acres and is finalizing a deal with The Endowment and local officials (pending seller details) to avoid development.  WHQR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Only half of New Hanover and Brunswick elementary schools reached the 95% measles vaccine rate needed for herd immunity, which could lead to a three-week quarantine for those exposed. Health officials in the region now offer weekly vaccination clinics (with Tuesday hours extended) to improve coverage.  WHQR
