ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A woods fire broke out Saturday afternoon off Carteret Road in Bolivia and was cleared late Saturday night with help from backup crews in Winnabow, Boiling Spring Lakes, and Supply; no injuries were reported amid ongoing dry conditions. WECT
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, Feb. 16, Duke Energy said it is exploring plans to build a nuclear facility with small modular reactors near Belews Creek in Stokes County. The project may use technology from Wilmington-based GE Vernova Hitachi to meet rising power demand as Duke retires its coal plants. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ After a winter storm, Soulstice Botanicals lost over 100 tropical plants when its heater stopped working, costing about $3,000 in damages. Owner Shannon Weems said her mobile bus store is rebuilding with local donations (via a GoFundMe) and plans to return with a full garden soon. WWAY

- ➤ North Carolina’s First in Freedom Festival runs from Feb. 21 to Feb. 28 with living history displays and commemoration at Moores Creek National Battlefield. The site will host colonial demonstrations and musket + cannon fire shows on Feb. 27, marking the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Locals can learn about African American history on the Wilmington Color Heritage Tour, a 90-minute bus ride that visits sites like 1898 Memorial park and Bellamy Mansion. The tour will soon expand to include Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach *for a fuller experience*. WWAY
- ➤ Moores Creek National Battlefield marks where patriots defeated Loyalists on Feb. 27, 1776 and now offers trails, exhibits and reenactments for visitors. A replica swivel gun gifted by the Stamp Defiance Chapter on April 24, 2021 honors the site’s history and the chapter’s centennial milestone. Wilmington Star-News

- ➤ Voting for this week’s StarNews Student of the Week is open until 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19 (high school staff from New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties nominated students for strong academic achievement and community impact), and the winner will be announced later on Thursday. - ➤ The state plans to protect The Point, a 150-acre natural site at the tip of Topsail Island, if the N.C. Coastal Land Trust closes on the purchase using up to $50,000 in grant funds; a public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 25 at the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission meeting. Wilmington Star-News
