COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers for 2026 Work on Wilmington, New Hanover County’s largest single-day volunteer event on Saturday, April 10 from 8 a.m. to noon. People 12 and older can sign up by Friday, April 10 to help with projects at local nonprofits and schools.  WECT
  • Local nonprofit Anthony’s Way – The Road to Kindness hosts its 3rd annual Walk for Kindness and ADHD on Saturday, Feb. 28, 1 to 3 p.m. at Carolina Beach Lake Park; participants walk one mile in orange, see a martial arts demo, and enjoy music with refreshments at The Veggie Wagon.  Port City Daily
  • The Leadership Wilmington class of 2026 via the Chamber of Commerce Foundation seeks volunteers for the 20th Work on Wilmington event on April 18, 8 a.m. to noon; supplies are provided and volunteers aged 12+ who sign up by Feb. 20 will earn a commemorative t-shirt (confirmed sizes).  Port City Daily

CULTURE NEWS

  • Filming for the movie sequel to the popular TV series The Summer I Turned Pretty will begin in Wilmington in late April, with author Jenny Han set to write and direct at Cousins Beach — a move expected to boost local film production.  Wilmington Star-News
  • WilmingtoNColor will host its 2nd annual Black History Carnival on Feb. 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Chow Town across from 1898 Memorial Park, featuring mini bus tours plus HBCU booths, bounce houses, video gaming and face painting to celebrate Wilmington’s rich heritage.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Hanover County commissioners approved $1M on Feb. 16 to help fund a 25-acre park on Greenville Loop Road in Wilmington. The city and The Endowment are matching funds for a $9.75M purchase that needs $10M extra for infrastructure and will begin design soon.  Wilmington Star-News
  • NC Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking public input on the 2026-2027 migratory bird hunting seasons for waterfowl, webless migratory species, and extended falconry until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4. Commissioners will vote on the final season dates on April 16 (official guidance also indicates ongoing avian influenza concerns).  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lower Cape Fear LifeCare closed its Sharing the Journey capital campaign after raising over $15 million to expand hospice care centers, dementia support, and LifeCare Scholars from its 46-year legacy of care (including a $5.1 million grant to boost Memory Partners services).  WWAY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Voters can cast ballots for the StarNews Athlete of the Week, featuring 32 strong nominees + standout high school athletes from basketball and swimming, until Thursday, Feb. 19 at 11:59 p.m. The poll is run by fans and remains open online.  Wilmington Star-News
