COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday at Olsen Park near North Chase to mark improvements. The park now features a fenced multipurpose field (with dedicated pickleball courts, a walking trail, and additional parking) that will serve local residents.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cameron Art Museum hosts Living History Day on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to mark the 161st anniversary of the Battle of Forks Road — featuring family activities, guest lectures, and USCT reenactments from Battery B; lectures at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. require registration.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Hanover County Schools announced CFO Ashley Sutton as the 2026 Lou Thompson Distinguished Service Award recipient from NCASBO, recognizing her work in school finance and auditing (with over 20 years of experience).  WECT
  • At Anderson Elementary, first-grade teacher Courtney Malahais is named February Teacher of the Month for her creative 'pineapples' approach that builds persistence and positivity in her class. The award, sponsored by Masonboro Kids Dentistry, April Jones Insurance + The Golf Barn, comes with a $600 prize.  WWAY
  • Jonathan Fariss, a third-year science teacher at Murray Middle School, was named NHCS Rookie Teacher of the Year on Feb. 17 at an event hosted by Wilmington Rotary Club and New Hanover County Schools; he was one of five finalists honored for his dedication to student success.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials and the local water authority are urging residents to oppose Fuquay-Varina’s plan to remove 6.17 million gallons per day from the Cape Fear River, which could threaten drinking water for 200,000+ people. Public comments on the request will be accepted until April 1.  Port City Daily
  • New Hanover County dedicated Fire Station 13 in Castle Hayne on Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony, and the facility features independent living areas (for firefighter wellness) and water filtration systems to support safe operations as the community grows.  WWAY
