- ➤ WilmingtoNColor hosted its annual Black History Month carnival at Chow Town in downtown Wilmington where local families enjoyed games like cornhole and basketball, a bounce house, balloon animals, food trucks, music by DJ Bigg-B (local DJ), and a tour bus providing Black history education. WECT

- ➤ WilmingtoNColor hosted its annual Black History Month carnival at Chow Town in downtown Wilmington early today as food trucks and local vendors joined in the celebration. WECT
- ➤ Residents celebrated America’s history at Colonial Topsail on Feb. 21 at the Historic Society of Topsail Island, where reenactors, interpreters, and local groups delivered demonstrations, speeches, and performances — along with a tea party and a lunch featuring Brunswick stew, cornbread and carrot cake. - ➤ According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, gas prices in the Lower Atlantic region declined for the second week with average regular fuel expected to be $2.75 per gallon on Monday (down from last week’s $2.74), making regional prices about 6% lower than the national average. - ➤ Leaders in 100 Black Men of Coastal NC shared life skills and mentoring insights with local youth today (in honor of Black History Month) to empower Wilmington’s community growth. WECT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the NC Court of Appeals ruled Duke Energy broke state law by charging customers fuel costs from two years back — customers will not get refunds as the court struck down orders allowing older cost recovery. WECT
- ➤ On Feb. 19, Holly Ridge council approved Project Ajax (a 1,500-acre mixed-use development to annex 1,226 acres with up to 2,750 homes and 64 acres of commercial space, with first move-ins expected by late 2027) amid local concerns over school capacity, water supply, and environmental risks. - ➤ The North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled in Wilmington that Duke Energy broke state law by including fuel-cost shortfalls from 2022 in its 2024 rate hike, and customers will not receive refunds (regulators approved recovery of current fuel costs). Gov. Stein criticized the decision while the company said future bills remain unchanged. FOX Wilmington

- ➤ A longtime pizza favorite will return to Wilmington in fall 2027 as Elizabeth’s Pizza is set to reopen in a new five-story building called The Grove on Market converting the North 17 Shopping Center — home to the restaurant since 1987 — now under redevelopment. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Apartment listing prices in Wilmington reached a median of $1,731 in January, up 5% from last year's $1,650, while one bedroom and two bedroom prices remain about 10% above the state median (Zumper data). Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ New Hanover County’s median home listing price fell to $525,000 in January from $529,250 last month with 360 new listings. In Wilmington metro, median listings dropped to $476,500 while homes stayed on market for about 82 days compared to 78 nationally. Wilmington Star-News

- ➤ On Friday, Feb. 20, Hoggard's girls basketball team clinched its fifth conference title with a 53-25 win over Topsail at Brunswick Community College + the 25-1 Vikings now prepare for the NCHSAA playoffs and a potential third straight Final Four. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Laney basketball captured the Carolina Coastal Conference tournament crown on Feb. 21 when Kareem Anderson scored 24 points to secure a 50 to 46 win over Hoggard, and both teams advanced to the state playoffs. Wilmington Star-News
