COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wilmington’s Parks and Recreation advisory board is planning next steps for a 25-acre park on Greenville Loop Road and will begin a public design charrette (open to all residents) to gather ideas; officials expect the design process to take about one year (subject to input).  WWAY
  • Winter Park, one of Wilmington's oldest neighborhoods, grew along an early 1900s trolley line linking downtown to Wrightsville Beach and is home to landmarks like the 1912 Winter Park Elementary School and historic churches that have long served local residents.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said Michele Hundley Smith was found alive after disappearing 24 years ago from Eden while shopping at a Kmart in Martinsville + her daughter, Amanda, shared mixed feelings about reconnecting.  WECT
  • Kids Making It, a nonprofit teaching woodworking and life skills to disadvantaged youth, received a $900K grant from the New Hanover Community Endowment — its three-year award supports new staff for mental health and community outreach to boost core programs for nearly 950 local youth.  WECT

  • Platypus & Gnome near Wrightsville Beach will close on Feb. 28 after owner Matt Danylec seeks more time with his family. The restaurant started in 2016 in downtown, moved in 2023, and became known for unique pizzas + exotic meats.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The eighth annual Beer, Bourbon, & BBQ Festival returns on March 14 at Live Oak Bank Pavilion; guests receive a souvenir tasting glass for unlimited beer and bourbon sampling and food with live music (the event coincides with St. Patrick’s Day weekend and features a pie-eating contest).  WECT
  • World War II warbirds will be on display and available for rides at Wilmington International Airport from April 10 to April 12 to celebrate America 250 during the Azalea Festival—featuring a simulated Japanese Zero attack on USS North Carolina weather permitting, with free parking and admission.  Port City Daily

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Brunswick County is named the top relocation destination in the South by U.S. News + World Report, with growth and new developments rising. Leland will lower its property tax rate later this year to boost affordability for residents.  Port City Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Feb. 22, a blockage from fats, oils, and grease near 501 Wayne Drive caused over 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to spill into Burnt Mill Creek; crews cleared the blockage by 2:42 p.m. and began cleanup and water quality sampling.  WECT

SPORTS NEWS

  • The John T. Hoggard High School men’s (20-6) and women’s (25-1) basketball teams begin playoffs today with first-round byes and will face Tuesday’s winners in second-round games on Thursday, while several other schools also secure early advantages in their contests.  FOX Wilmington
