COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Empty Bowls Wilmington 2026 returns on March 13 to bring the community together for its 20-year hunger relief event. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Activity Center, with proceeds benefiting local food pantries.  Port City Daily
  • Chef Katherine Myhand organized Stirring Up Hope, a soup tasting event in Wilmington to raise funds for Chef Christina Mullins battling breast cancer; Mullins has served the community for over 10 years.  WECT
  • The North Carolina Bar Association is hosting the 4ALL Statewide Service Day telethon on Friday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wilmington residents can call in to speak with a lawyer for free legal advice when the number is announced.  WECT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Avelo Airlines announced today that it will extend its flight schedule at Wilmington International Airport through Nov. 17, serving Nashville (BNA), New Haven (HVN), Philadelphia/Wilmington (ILG), Rochester (ROC), Tampa (TPA) and Washington D.C./Baltimore (BWI). The schedule extension follows service reductions and a base closing in January.  FOX Wilmington

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilmington residents can welcome St. Patrick’s Day and say goodbye to Valentine’s Day this weekend with a full slate of plays (like To Kill a Mockingbird), comedy, art, and Irish-themed events at local venues.  Wilmington Star-News
  • A new ABC drama series called RJ Decker, shot in Wilmington, premieres next Tuesday at 10 p.m. on ABC and streams on Hulu the following day. The series, led by Kevin Rankin, features local spots (Carolina Beach and Fort Fisher) and began filming in November.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College will host a Career Discovery Night on its downtown campus on Thursday, March 12 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the WA Building (room WA3023) to help visitors explore its Graphic Design curriculum and potential career paths.  WECT
  • New Hanover High School has opened the Spark Lab to give students hands-on access to cybersecurity, robotics, graphic design and digital media. The lab, managed by George Knips (its overseer), lets students explore technology in ways that traditional classes do not offer.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Alliance for Cape Fear Trees and New Hanover County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association will plant 30 native trees at the DREAMS Center for Arts Education in Wilmington on Sunday, March 1 to add shade, beauty, and environmental benefits to the campus.  WECT
