COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Southport Springfest is set for April 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Southport and will feature live music, a swing dance lesson, handmade arts and crafts, children’s activities, plant sales and local food vendors.  WECT
  • Coastal BUDS will host a World Down Syndrome Day event with live music from Eric McGuinness, lawn games, face painting, a reptile zoo and other kids’ activities on Saturday, Mar. 21, 1 to 6 p.m. at Waterline Brewing — a dollar per pint will be donated to support programs.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilmington's N.C. Azalea Festival hired Melissa Lasarsky as its new executive director. The NC native and UNC Wilmington graduate brings 18 years of event marketing and leadership experience to shape the 79th annual festival scheduled for April 8 to 12.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College will host its Spring 2026 Student Art Exhibition (displaying student work) at Wilma W. Daniels Gallery from Monday, March 9 to Wednesday, May 1 with free weekday viewing from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a reception is on Friday, March 27 from 6 to 9 p.m.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lionfish, an invasive predator from Asia first seen 30 years ago off the coast, are now widespread and may harm local marine life. Divers + seafood vendors are taking steps to capture these venomous fish and help protect local waters.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elwell Ferry paused operations and will resume service today at 8 a.m., while no road closures are expected and the park and disc golf course remain open.  WECT
  • Kenan Fountain restoration resumed on Monday, March 1 as crews reactivated traffic control+reinstalled barriers to guide drivers and pedestrians. The project, which began in November 2025, is set to conclude by the end of April.  WECT

HEALTH NEWS

  • March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and Cape Fear doctors advise average-risk residents to begin colonoscopies at 45 to catch polyps early and prevent advanced cancer. Local experts highlight that early detection saves lives as cases rise among younger patients.  WHQR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Construction on The Club at Midtown in Wilmington advanced as membership sales began on March 2, with the sports and social hub set to open in 2026 (providing a new community amenity).  Wilmington Star-News
