- ➤ The Town of Leland will host a free native tree giveaway event at the Leland Cultural Arts Center on March 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Alliance for Cape Fear Trees members will help as households may choose up to two trees while supplies last. WECT
- ➤ The Wilmington chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. will host the Rise and Run 5K fundraiser at Long Leaf Park on Saturday, March 21. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the race, which will benefit the foundation and The Carousel Child Advocacy Center, kicks off at 9 a.m. WWAY
- ➤ The Wilmington Rotary Club will host its 5th Leaders in Service Awards on May 12 at the Burney Center. The ceremony will honor local leaders Katrina Knight of Good Shepherd Center, Betsy Graham of veterans services, and WWII historian Wilbur Jones Jr. for their contributions. WECT
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ GE Aerospace announced Monday plans to invest $60 million in its Wilmington facility to upgrade equipment and building improvements to meet rising aircraft part demand. The project is part of a $1 billion plan, with over $160 million allocated for North Carolina sites (final timelines pending). WWAY
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Brit Floyd will perform two shows at the Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College (Aug. 13 and 14). The first features music from The Wall and the second from The Dark Side of the Moon. Members can buy tickets online March 11 and the public March 12. WWAY
- ➤ Delta Foundation of the Cape Fear will celebrate African American arts and culture at Union Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, April 11 at 4 p.m. as part of the NC Azalea Festival with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra opening and drummers from Pamoja! Drummers Troupe honoring Madafo Lloyd Wilson. WWAY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cape Fear Community College launches a new one-year massage therapy program starting April 17 that offers 683 hours of hands-on training (classes on Fridays and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) to prepare students for licensure. Interested individuals can join a virtual information session on March 18 at 6:00 p.m. to learn more. WWAY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cape Fear Public Utility Authority set a boil-water advisory for about 300 customers (including parts of Lumina Ave, Waynick Blvd, Birmingham, Oceanic, and Stone streets) starting at 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 as crews replace valves and residents are advised to boil water for one minute before use. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ NCHSAA basketball championship games will run from March 11-14 at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (on Wake Forest’s campus) in Winston-Salem as 16 finalists in eight classifications vie for titles following a major league restructure. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ UNCW men's basketball head coach Takayo Siddle confirmed a five-year contract extension during a postgame press conference after a loss in the CAA quarterfinals. Siddle, who began as an assistant coach and returned in 2020, said he feels blessed to call Wilmington home (and will lead the Seahawks to success). WWAY
