- ➤ A medical examiner report said Megan Dolan died in a fire on Master’s Lane in Hampstead in August 2024 after suffering severe burns and a stab wound near the exit; her brother Matthew Dolan was arrested in Chardon, Ohio and faces charges for first-degree murder, first-degree arson, and cruelty to animals (if convicted, he may face life without parole or the death penalty). - ➤ Dakota Quinn Knight, 30, pleaded guilty in New Hanover County Superior Court for the fatal hit-and-run of construction worker Michelle Renee Von Seggern on April 11, 2024—he drove under the influence, fled the scene, was apprehended with a blood alcohol level of 0.20 g/mL, and received a sentence of four to seven years with credit for time served. - ➤ Celina Merlos, a custodian at Trask Middle School, saved a student’s life during lunch by performing the Heimlich maneuver when the student began choking on cheese. - ➤ The Wilmington City Council will meet March 18 to review a $5.38 million contract with Highland Paving for road repairs and a $1.353 million drainage grant to reduce flooding along Hewlett’s Creek. They will also consider $824,652 in gap financing for a housing project by Cape Fear Collective and a request to remove board term limits for Cape Fear Public Utility Authority—key decisions affecting city services. - ➤ Novant Health Inc. has proposed a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Wilmington to shift 60 beds from NHRMC at a project cost of $92 million, with work planned to finish in December 2027.
