COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees hosted a tree planting event in Wilmington where volunteers learned tree-planting techniques at a 10 a.m. demonstration and were grouped to plant trees at locations set by the City—aiming to spread green benefits evenly across neighborhoods. Isabelle Shepherd said the event supports economic, environmental, and health benefits for all residents.  WWAY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rescuers saved a swimmer on Sunday at around 1 p.m. in Oak Island when he was pulled nearly 300 yards into the ocean near Lockwoods Folly Inlet (the victim was exhausted and ingested seawater but did not suffer further injuries).  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Wilmington said it will begin replacing the decking on the downtown Riverwalk this week. Work starts at the Nun Street access and moves north—sections will be closed with detours posted until the project is completed.  FOX Wilmington
  • A federal agency is investigating firefighter health concerns at Station 13 in Castle Hayne after a fire captain and union officials said toxic hazards had not been fixed. County officials said on March 10 that tests and cleanups are underway and that firefighters will move to a new station in October 2025—more details will follow after the review.  Port City Daily

SPORTS NEWS

  • In 2002, UNCW’s men's basketball team upset fourth-seeded USC with a 93 to 89 overtime win — a move that led a Los Angeles Times columnist to mock the team and university. The Wilmington Morning Star defended the victory and stated that USC lost because it played with its own arrogance.  Wilmington Star-News
  • UNCW Seahawks earned a No. 14 seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament and will play No. 3 Texas Tech in Wichita on Thursday—marking their first tournament appearance in eight years after winning the Coastal Athletic Association tournament on Tuesday. Leading scorer Donovan Newby said he has dreamed of playing in March Madness since he was young.  Wilmington Star-News
