COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 17th Annual National Missing Persons Conference will be held in Wilmington starting Friday, March 21, where families, volunteers, and law officials will get free training, education, and support. Organizers will hold a public candlelight vigil Saturday at 7:30 p.m.—honoring those still missing with appearances from speakers like Wilmington Police Chief Donnie Williams and advocacy leader Dena Cox.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The North Carolina Azalea Festival in Wilmington will host events starting April 2 and ending April 6 including a street fair on April 4, a parade on April 5, and Queen Azalea’s coronation on April 2—along with garden parties, concerts, arts and crafts, home tours, a beer garden, a children’s area, a dance party, celebrity sightings and a boxing tournament.  Wilmington Star-News

  • StarNews asks readers to vote for Student of the Week from three high school nominees (from New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties) until 11 a.m. on March 20, and the winner will be announced on March 21.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Cape Fear Community College will host its annual Riverfront Boat Show on April 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. along the Cape Fear River between Hotel Ballast and the Coastline Convention Center — the free event will feature student-built boats and custom creations by local craftsmen to raise funds for boat-building scholarships.  WECT
  • State Superintendent Maurice 'Mo' Green will host a listening session at John J. Blair Elementary School on March 31 at 6 p.m. — inviting parents, students, educators, school staff and community members to share ideas for a new strategic plan to improve NC public schools as part of his 'Mo Wants to Know' tour.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Students and staff at the UNCW Center for Marine Science are working on research projects to protect and study coral reefs that are vital to marine life. They are examining coral reproduction and the role of sponges and seaweeds — key supports for reef health — to help preserve these ecosystems.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington’s city council is voting today at 6:30 p.m. on a resolution by council member Salette Andrews to preserve roughly 60 acres at 3990 Independence Blvd — the move follows a withdrawn rezoning application and aims to secure the land's cultural and ecological value as a public green space.  Port City Daily
  • The city of Wilmington announced plans to build a new kayak launch along Bradley Creek near the Bradley Creek Bridge off Circular Drive—this project includes a floating dock, boardwalk, parking area and asphalt trail. Bids are open until April 8 and construction will last three months from the start date—providing a new launch point for local kayakers.  Wilmington Star-News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Affordable housing in Wilmington means a home costs no more than 30% of a household's gross monthly income; fair market rents in 2024 were about $1,515 for a two bedroom unit and $2,002 for a three bedroom unit. County programs help families earning below the area median while new projects like Avenue Flats, Pierson Pointe and Starway Village will break ground this year—steps aimed at easing the rising cost of housing in a fast growing area.  Wilmington Star-News
