- ➤ Thalian Hall CEO Shane Fernando announced Monday a $25 million capital campaign to renovate the 1858 venue in Wilmington into a temple for the performing arts. The renovation will double its space by adding a new theater, coffee shop and outdoor performance area—construction is planned to begin in spring 2026 and finish by 2028. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Wilmington will host the 78th North Carolina Azalea Festival from April 2 to 6 with more than 20 events, including the coronation of Queen Bethany Joy Lenz at 2:30 p.m. on April 2 at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater — garden tours, a parade, and live music will also take place — with proceeds benefiting local nonprofits. - ➤ The North Carolina Black Film Festival announced its honorees for 2025, naming Bruce W. Smith as the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in Animation and Isiah Donté Lee as the Visionary Award winner in Cinematography. The 22nd festival will be held April 10 through 13 — in Wilmington. WECT

- ➤ STARBASE Wilmington will close next week—staff will be furloughed as the site waits for federal funds to be distributed. The program is set to officially close on March 31 and will resume operations once the funds are allocated. WECT

- ➤ Wildfires continue burning across the Carolinas and forced mandatory evacuations over the weekend. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on March 22 for a 1,300-acre fire in Pickens County—both states have banned outdoor burning amid high winds and dry conditions. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ County commissioners heard public comment on Monday about construction underway on new trails, a parking lot, and other facilities in an 82 acre preserve south of Smith Creek Park. UNCW professor Roger Shew proposed using a 60 acre parcel along Independence Blvd for education while city and county plan to purchase an adjacent piece for about $3 million—an idea supported by local resident Sharon Valentine.
