  • Hollis Briggs, a longtime community leader, was honored in a celebration of life held Saturday at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where leaders and loved ones gathered to reflect on his role in organizing the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and strengthening community ties. The service ended with his procession marching along the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade route before his burial at Bethel AME Church Cemetery in Leland — marking a final tribute to his lasting legacy.  WWAY
  • Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department shared photos on Facebook—showing Cape Fear area fire crews working to contain massive wildfires in Polk County. Chief Mercer and Captain Albosta were assigned to the fire lines, and relief crews will be deployed next week to support the containment efforts.  FOX Wilmington

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Port of Wilmington received the ZIM Mount Rainier on Sunday at 12:53 a.m.—the 1,200-foot ship, arriving from Charleston as part of a ZIM and MSC shipping partnership, can carry 15,500 containers and is powered by liquefied natural gas.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Hanover County Board of Education decided not to move forward with an AI surveillance system that would use school cameras in real time after concerns about cost, privacy, and data security were raised. Some board members say the idea may be revisited at a meeting on Tuesday, April 1 (leaders still differ on the plan).  WHQR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last Friday, Wilmington hosted a legislative breakfast where local and state policymakers met to review quality of life issues—hurricane relief, affordable housing, water contamination, law enforcement and economic needs. Leaders discussed federal funding limits, measures to address PFAS in water and plans for key infrastructure upgrades like a bridge replacement and wastewater plant modernization.  WHQR

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Saturday, the R.E.A.C.H Survivor’s Symposium gathered breast cancer patients and survivors at the Burney Center at UNCW—experts explained self-care tips and therapies while keynote speaker Amy Gordon emphasized the impact of safer personal care routines on overall health.  WWAY
  • Lisa Banach, a breast cancer survivor from Palmetto Creek in Bolivia, has turned her personal battle into an annual English-style tea party that raises funds and awareness for the Breast Cancer Association since 2016. This year Novant Health's mobile mammogram unit will be onsite next Saturday, April 5th to offer free screenings for community members even if they do not attend the sold-out event.  WWAY

  • City officials are reviewing four housing developments that could add over 200 housing units if approved. Canvas Residential Partners submitted a plan for a 79-unit townhome project on N. Kerr Avenue that requires annexation—staff recommended conditional approval and the annexation will go before the planning board on April 2.  Port City Daily
