CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Wilmington father filed a $25,000 lawsuit against the police department and city after his son was found dead on Tru Colors Brewing property on April 18th. He said his son might have lived if officers handled his 911 call properly — he is seeking answers after his earlier suit was dismissed. FOX Wilmington
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Battleship North Carolina will be lit with spring colors from 7:30-9 p.m. today through April 6 in celebration of the Azalea Festival, showcasing bright pink, purple, and yellow lights along its historic shape. Downtown Wilmington is the best place to watch the display but the ship’s grounds and nearby roads will be closed—visitors should plan to view it from across the Cape Fear River. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Later this month, the Cameron Art Museum will open 'We Belong Here: The Gutierrez Collection', an exhibit of over 40 works of international art collected by Onay Gutierrez and Jeff Childers that explores ideas about identity and activism. An opening celebration is set for April 24 (6 to 9 p.m.) with a $15 entry fee for most visitors (free for CAM members, teachers, and students) while the exhibit runs from April 25 through September 7. - ➤ New lifeguard stands will be added to the four wheel drive beach at Fort Fisher Recreation Area this summer to boost emergency response, and lifeguards will begin training on May 12th for the season starting May 24th. Mobile stands will move to problem areas—cutting response time during busy times. WECT
- ➤ Wilmington City Council met recently to tackle a budget gap of $500,000 to $1 million caused in part by debt from the Skyline Center purchase and higher employee costs. City Manager Tony Caudle said they do not plan to raise taxes and will review cuts and reallocate funds from property sales—such as a $1.7 million sale of three Chestnut Street properties—before finalizing a recommended budget for the May 16 meeting and a public hearing on May 20.
