- ➤ Avelo Airlines announced on Thursday that it would open a base of operations at ILM by parking two aircraft each night—future expansion may add about 50 jobs to the Cape Fear region. Airport officials and Governor Josh Stein said the move comes after strong passenger support and rapid airport growth. WWAY

- ➤ On Wednesday, Queen Bethany Joy Lenz was crowned at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater to kick off the 78th annual North Carolina Azalea Festival, which runs through April 6 with more than 20 events across Wilmington. Today and in the coming days, residents will enjoy garden tours, parades, and a fireworks show over the Cape Fear River—proceeds benefit local nonprofits and beautification efforts. Port City Daily
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cape Fear Community College announced its ESL program will expand and now serves more than 500 students—26% more than last year. The college will add classes at all four campuses, the Willard Outreach Center and Cape Fear Middle School, and will work with the Wilmington Islamic Center to reach more learners. WECT
- ➤ North Carolina's teacher turnover rate fell from 11.5% last year to about 9.88% now but remains above the seven-year average, and many new teachers received emergency licenses — signaling that they need extra support. State Superintendent Mo Green said education leaders will raise teacher pay in a joint legislative agenda to help keep more teachers in the classroom. WECT

- ➤ Sen. Michael Lee introduced his 2025 Water Safety Act last week to direct the Department of Environmental Quality to set PFAS discharge limits and safe drinking water standards while creating a $56 million mitigation fund and a $14 million research fund—measures aimed at protecting public health. The bill requires limits to be adopted by October with a three-year compliance schedule and comes as new industrial facilities are planned near the Cape Fear watershed. Port City Daily
- ➤ Avery Marshall and Alisa Carr filed a federal lawsuit against the sheriff’s offices of Pender and Lee counties after their home was raided in April 2024 while officers searched for a suspect who was never there— the incident left a shattered storm door and a dented front door, and they are now seeking compensation for the damages.
