COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several streets in Wilmington will be closed this week for two Azalea Festival events. The Street Fair will limit traffic from 7 a.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday while a parade is scheduled for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.  WECT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The NCDOT will widen Carolina Beach Road and planned relocation of 13 businesses includes the Greenfield Lake Yacht Club (a locally owned bar). The club will close on Sunday, April 26 and must move by May 1 as bidding for construction is scheduled for summer.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilson Center at CFCC will host Blade Runner LIVE on Sunday, Nov. 15 where audiences will see Blade Runner on a large HD display with live music. Members can purchase tickets starting April 8 at 10 a.m., and general sales will begin April 9 at 10 a.m.  WWAY
  • Vintage military aircraft will take flight at Wilmington International Airport on April 11 and 12 for the free Warbirds Over Wilmington event as part of America 250 festivities. Guests will view static displays, take rides on select historic aircraft, and see military exhibits from the National Guard.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College hosts a three-day panel series celebrating America 250 with veteran speakers. Sessions run April 6 from 10 a.m. to noon, today from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at Union Station, Room 170 (502 N. Front St.).  WWAY
  • The Children’s Museum of Wilmington will host its annual Science at Play event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Apr. 18 as part of the Science Festival. Kids will enjoy STEM experiments including slime, robotics demos, and a book reading by the Hip Hop M.D. (Ticket prices vary.)  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council is set to consider renaming Greenfield Grind Skate Park — a move to honor pro skateboarder Alec Chambers — during its meeting today. The proposal follows unanimous committee approval and is backed by a petition with over 6,800 signatures.  WWAY

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ben and Jerry’s opened its new ice cream shop at Mayfaire Town Center last month and will celebrate Cone Day on Tuesday, April 14 by giving out free ice cream from noon to 8 p.m. at 951 International Drive (face-painting, games and music are also planned).  Port City Daily

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Will Seward, a 6-foot-6 senior, led Hoggard to its first state championship appearance in 56 years and was named the StarNews All-Area Boys Basketball Player of the Year; local first and second team selections recognized top high school talent.  Wilmington Star-News
