- ➤ A local teacher and mother, Raquel, will receive a new home from Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity next month as part of Women Build 2025 in Haven Place—Castle Hayne. More than 300 community members will help build her home during scheduled events in May from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. WECT
- ➤ Nico is a mixed-breed puppy from Freedom Bridge Animal Rescue who is looking for his forever home and is known for being sweet, playful, and energetic. You can meet him and his siblings at Hollywood Feed on April 19 from 12 to 3 p.m. if you are interested in adopting him. WECT

- ➤ The City of Wilmington’s Parks and Recreation Department will unveil new murals honoring Coach Sherriedale Morgan on April 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Sherriedale Morgan Fitness Center—volunteers painted the murals in February as part of a community project. WECT
- ➤ Bruce. W. Smith was honored at the NC Black Film Festival for his work as the creator of The Proud Family and as a lead animator on films like Frozen and Tarzan—he is seen as a trailblazer in animation. His work will be shown at 6:30 p.m. today at Jengo’s Playhouse and he will receive his Lifetime Achievement Award at 2 p.m. on Sunday. WECT
- ➤ A Wilmington film called Drought is now on Peacock. The movie follows siblings facing a drought and a young autistic brother who predicts a storm while riding in an ice cream truck — the filmmakers say it shows real representation during autism awareness month. WWAY
- ➤ Fort Fisher State Historic Site said it consulted sister agencies before removing overgrown yaupon and wax myrtle from Battle Acre to improve visitor safety and stop illicit dumping; staff cleared over 20 bags of trash and the site plans to reforest with native Live Oaks—using a stone wall to protect against erosion. Officials said the removal was timed to avoid disrupting nesting season. WECT

- ➤ The N.C. Department of Transportation announced that the Southport—Fort Fisher ferry route will switch to its full summer schedule starting April 15 and running through Sept. 8. The updated service will run Monday through Friday from both Southport and Fort Fisher. WECT
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Developers submitted plans to build a workforce housing project on S. Kerr Avenue that will have 184 apartments in three buildings—plus a playground, a clubhouse and a picnic shelter. The city council approved the rezoning and $3.15 million in gap financing in September and the project now goes before the Technical Review Committee. WWAY
