COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area will transport 82 local veterans to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Apr. 18 via a chartered American Airlines flight from Wilmington International Airport. Later that day, a Welcome Home Celebration will be held at Aero Center Wilmington + free parking is available for guests.  WWAY
  • The Fuzzy Needle will host NYC author Laurie Gwen Shapiro for a reading, Q&A and DJ set on Thursday, Apr. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at 716 S. 17th St to benefit the Cape Fear Literacy Council.  WECT
  • Kure Beach Community Fest will be held on Saturday, April 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ocean Front Park with live music, mini golf, rock painting and food trucks. Town officials — common supporters of community events — waived pay parking enforcement for the day.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arts and culture writer John Staton attended Thalian Hall today to see the Thalian Association's production of 'The Wizard of Oz' (a community favorite) in Wilmington. The performance is expected to charm local theater fans (with classic songs and sets).  Wilmington Star-News
  • The Bellamy Mansion Museum is hosting a 90-minute walking tour of historic downtown on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 9 a.m. (503 Market St.) led by Executive Director Gareth Evans; the cost is $20 plus tax and registration is required.  Port City Daily
  • Eternal Sunshine Cafe at 420 Eastwood Road in Wilmington launched its eight-course Eternal Summer Dinner Experience on April 3 with creative summer dishes and a community Lego art project. The café will host the next dinner on Apr. 28 with an optional wine pairing.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WRAAP will host a graduation ceremony on May 11 at 4 p.m. at Freedom’s Way Ministries + the event will honor local youth completing its After School Enrichment Academy and feature a keynote by James H. Faison III.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Novant Health is hosting a drive-thru event on April 25, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two locations (2243 South 17th St and 9104 Market St) to allow safe disposal of expired medications, syringes, and vaping devices.  Port City Daily
  • After an explosion on Aug. 19, 2025 demolished the new Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center facility on New Centre Drive, its MRI machine—renamed Mariah—is now repaired and performing 10 scans so far while expected to handle at least three daily for Wilmington pet owners.  WECT
