CRIME NEWS

  • Janison Matthew Odell, a detention officer fired by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office after reportedly violating state domestic violence law, was arrested for communicating threats, 2nd-degree trespass and stalking — he was released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.  WWAY
  • A Burgaw man was taken into custody after a hit-and-run on Saturday injured bicyclist John Williams, 57, who died on Sunday, and police charged suspect David Neely, 68, with DWI, Serious Injury, Felony Hit and Run and 2nd Degree Murder after he fled the scene on the 5100 block of Wrightsville Avenue.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, UNCW’s School of Nursing celebrated 40 years of service at the Warwick Center — gathering teachers, students, and alumni and hosting a student competition for the best thesis or dissertation poster. The school, which started with ten students and now graduates about 120 nurses each year — has grown to meet the community’s increasing need for skilled healthcare professionals.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • North Carolina nonprofit groups including Cape Fear River Watch filed a motion Monday to unseal up to 21,000 documents that Chemours and DuPont tried to keep hidden in a lawsuit with local water utilities and governments. The groups argue the records are key as Chemours plans to expand the Fayetteville Works facility (which may lead to higher PFAS emissions).  Port City Daily
  • A new PBS half-hour special will feature Battleship North Carolina in a segment that explains how tidal flooding around the historic ship surged by 7,000% since its 1961 arrival and led to visitor access restrictions and restoration work. The special will air April 17 at 8:30 p.m. on PBS NC—streaming online.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council passed a resolution Tuesday night that opposes state House Bill 765 which would let developers sue local officials and limit zoning choices — the council also approved spending $2 million to resurface Dawson and Wooster Streets and $70k for new sting center offices at the Skyline Center.  FOX Wilmington
  • The UNCW Board of Trustees will hold several committee meetings in Ballroom C at the Burney Center on Thursday, April 24 — the regular quarterly meeting follows on Friday, April 25 at 9:30 a.m. Some business may be discussed in closed session per the Open Meetings Act.  University of North Carolina Wilmington

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Realtor.com data shows that in January home sales in New Hanover County reached a median price of $425,000 — up 4.9% from December’s $405,000. Single-family prices rose by 10.9% to $446,500 while condo prices dropped to $392,000 and overall sales fell 4.3% from last January.  Wilmington Star-News
