BUSINESS NEWS

  • Three Friends Coffee announced that its downtown Skyline location on N Front Street will close on May 31 due to safety issues and challenges with parking and building management— it will remain open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. until then.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilmington Riverwalk ranked third in USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Riverwalk — one of 20 finalists from across the nation. The area offers cafes, bars, and shops along the Cape Fear River and hosts Riverfest each October.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Carolina Beach Boardwalk was one of 20 finalists in USA TODAY’s Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Boardwalk + it finished No. 3. Built in the 1930s, the boardwalk offers classic shops, restaurants and amusement rides plus seasonal live concerts and fireworks.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College has launched a 300-hour Heavy Equipment Operator course to train students to safely operate bulldozers, excavators, and backhoes with enrollment open and classes beginning on May 13. The program runs Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the North Campus and a Rocky Point construction site — developed with input from Thompson, Corder, and Company and Honeycutt Construction Services.  WWAY
  • CFCC announced a Heavy Equipment Operator course to meet growing demand from local construction firms; the course, developed in partnership with industry, will begin on May 13 and run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the North Campus + a facility in Rocky Point.  WECT
  • Mrs. Britney Rogers was named Teacher of the Month at Cape Fear Elementary — her kindergartners cheered when they learned of the award. She has spent over ten years helping little students learn and grow every day.  WWAY
  • Last week, community members and educators met at the first Education Focus Forum in New Hanover County to discuss the impact of Executive Order 14242 that shifts power from the U.S. Department of Education to parents and state lawmakers—attendees questioned future funding and the lack of participation from many state officials. Organizers said more forums will follow to help find answers for the challenges facing local schools.  WHQR

  • Wilmington's 35th annual Earth Day Festival will be held on April 26 at Long Leaf Park from noon to 6 and will offer live music, food trucks, and environmental displays with free shuttle service from Wave Transit. Oak Island events on April 26 at Middleton Park Complex and Bill Smith Park will feature interactive activities and a tree dedication ceremony at 2 p.m.  Wilmington Star-News
