CRIME NEWS
- ➤ WPD officers are on the scene of a barricaded subject in the 4800 block of Whitner Dr (off Holy Tree RD) who reportedly fired at officers and advised local residents to stay indoors until further notice. WWAY
- ➤ Wilmington police say the 4800 block of Whitner Drive near Holly Tree Road is under a shelter-in-place order after a barricaded subject fired at an officer—residents must remain indoors as authorities update the situation. WECT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ This month marks 234 years since George Washington visited Wilmington in April 1791 — he arrived in a small carriage and was greeted with three 15-gun salutes. He stayed two nights at Mrs. John Quince's home near Third and Dock Street — a spot now marked by a historical marker. WWAY
- ➤ Tickets are on sale for Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors' Medicine Anniversary Tour show at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on Saturday, September 27. Fans in Wilmington can look forward to a live performance as part of the tour. WECT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The NHC 911 CARE Team was recognized during National Public Safety Communicators Week for supporting call takers since its November 2023 launch—handling about 2,500 calls and averaging 200 calls a month while offering needed mental health support and follow-up. WECT
- ➤ Carolina Beach Town Council finalized its new bike and pedestrian master plan last week — the plan will add bike lanes on St. Joseph Street and create safer crossings along major roads. The plan also calls for improved sidewalks and a neighborhood slow zone on Canal Drive to help ease parking demand and close gaps in the current network. WHQR

- ➤ UNC Wilmington’s athletic department is preparing for a new NCAA settlement that will pay roughly $2.8 billion to past and present athletes and bring rule changes including direct school payments, roster limits and the elimination of some walk-on spots starting July 1. Athletic Director Mike Oblinger said the school has been planning for these changes over the last 18 months and will work to drive more revenue—he believes the settlement will bring needed stability to college sports.
