  • Sheetz will open its third Wilmington location on Carolina Beach Road near Ashley High School with a grand opening on May 1 from 9-11 a.m. and a ribbon cutting at 10:45 a.m. (Customers who donate nonperishable food to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC will receive a Sheetz bag and a chance to win a gift card.)  Wilmington Star-News

  • Moody’s Ratings reaffirmed UNCW’s credit ratings by keeping its Aa3 rating on general revenue bonds and A1 rating on limited obligation bonds—evidence of the school’s strong financial foundation, growing enrollment, and coastal appeal.  University of North Carolina Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The new commercial kitchen at the MLK Center in Wilmington is set to open later this year to offer nutrition education & serve as a hub for local entrepreneurs. City officials said the project aligns with the city’s plan to boost economic development & help families access healthier meal options.  WECT
  • After residents raised concerns about animal welfare, county staff proposed fee increases—raising breeder permit fees from $20 to $150 and pet registration fees from $20 to $60—to update the animal ordinance; the proposal passed its first reading on Monday and will go to a final vote on May 5. The changes also aim to improve commercial animal regulation and encourage responsible pet ownership.  WECT
  • North Carolina residents in Wilmington must visit a DMV office by May 7 to obtain a REAL ID, which is required for domestic air travel and access to some federal facilities — online applications are not available for first-time REAL IDs.   • Novant Health is hosting a drive-through medication disposal event at two local sites (in Wilmington) where residents can drop off medications, syringes, and e-cigarette and vaping devices (for safe disposal).  WECT
  • Novant Health is hosting a drive-through medication disposal event on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—it will accept medications, syringes and vaping devices at its New Hanover Medical Plaza at 2243 South 17th St. and at its Scotts Hill Outpatient Surgery Center at 9104 Market St.  WECT
  • Novant Health will host a spring medication disposal drive-thru on Saturday, April 26th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two locations in Wilmington—New Hanover Medical Plaza at 2243 South 17th St. and Scotts Hill Outpatient Surgery Center at 9104 Market St.—to help community members safely dispose of expired medications, syringes and vaping devices with batteries removed.  WWAY

  • Wilmington sees few undeveloped lots left on busy Market Street as growth increases—developers proposed a mixed-use project at the Market Street and Alexander Road corner in Ogden on April 17, Vivo Living apartments opened in January on the former Motel 6 site, and a 304-unit housing project was proposed in Porters Neck one year after its initial application was withdrawn.  Wilmington Star-News
