COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 650 Food Lion employees volunteered today in Wilmington to sort produce, build senior nourishment boxes and work in community gardens with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, helping fight food insecurity. Their efforts will help provide over a million meals statewide.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cameron Art Museum will open Andy Warhol: Silver Clouds exhibit on June 19 as part of Fresh Air: Inflatable Sculptures, featuring helium-filled reflective pieces from 1966 and remaining open until Sep. 27; CAM members will preview the show on June 18.  WECT
  • Wilmington residents can enjoy local theater, live music, film screenings, comedy and art events from April 23 to April 26 at venues including Thalian Hall, CFCC Wilson Center and downtown galleries. It promises a vibrant weekend of creative experiences.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Iconic rock band ZZ Top will perform at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., with presale tickets available (today at 10 a.m.) and general tickets on sale (Friday, Apr. 24 at 10 a.m.).  FOX Wilmington

  • Job seekers in the Cape Fear region will connect with local employers at the WWAY Job Fair on Thursday, Apr. 23 from 2-6 p.m. at Independence Mall—attendees will also get free headshots for LinkedIn profiles.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hunter Smith at Charles P. Murray Middle School was named April Teacher of the Month (by WWAY) as he teaches business classes that give students practical lessons in marketing and entrepreneurship. He prepares students to think like real world problem solvers and future leaders.  WWAY
  • Across Eastern NC, thousands of students are taking part in Industry in Schools Month, a series of 64 career events run by STEM East partnering with local schools, colleges & industry from April 13-30 to explore future career paths and boost workforce skills.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Plastic Ocean Project will host its 5th Annual For the Ocean Gala on Saturday, April 25 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Aloft Wilmington at Coastline Center; the event honors Captain Charles Moore and Ralph Chami for their ocean conservation work while raising funds to combat plastic pollution.  WWAY
  • North Carolina Aquariums will lead the state's City Nature Challenge from Apr. 24-27 as residents use the free iNaturalist app to record local wildlife and upload observations by May 10. Environmental educators from NC Aquarium Fort Fisher (Pine Knoll Shores, Roanoke Island, and Jennette’s Pier) will guide the event.  WECT
  • Bald Head Island Conservancy is launching a new research fund that partners its Johnston Center for Coastal Sustainability with Georgia Tech for Georgia’s Tomorrow to use innovative technology + data analysis for coastal resilience.   • Wilmington City Council approved expanding the Brooklyn Arts Social District to every Saturday in a six-month pilot from April 25 to Oct. 24. The district spans 10 blocks along N. 4th Street + one block on Red Cross Street and includes 17 local businesses.  FOX Wilmington
