CULTURE NEWS

  • Pilots Chris (CT) Thomas and Mike (Buick) Eberhardt flew on World War II-era Warbird Thunder aircraft ahead of the Wings Over Carolina Beach air show. Their exclusive flight took place on April 24 and the air show continues today at Carolina Beach.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNCW announced Friday that Robert T. Burrus Jr. will become provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs — a role in which he will guide academic programs as the university nears its 80th anniversary.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews are battling a re-ignited wildfire at Whitehall Plantation in Pender County — it burned about 275 acres and remains roughly 30% contained, with officials warning that heavy rainfall is needed to help control the blaze.  WWAY
  • State regulators held a public hearing at Wilmington City Hall on proposed PFAS and 1,4-dioxane rules, where about 200 residents and officials voiced concerns over the lack of enforceable limits and deadlines; public comments remain open until June 15 as a fall vote nears.  Port City Daily
  • El Niño's increased wind shear is predicted to keep the hurricane season below average, with CSU forecasting 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major storms; local agencies in New Hanover, Pender and Leland will host free hurricane readiness expos starting May 16 to help residents prepare.  Port City Daily
  • NCDEQ warns that extreme drought conditions continue across 47 counties, with New Hanover among them—rainfall is 10 inches below normal and groundwater levels remain near-record low. Residents should check local water restrictions as officials prepare for worsening conditions.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wrightsville Beach is establishing emergency access lanes on its beaches to improve response and maintenance; crews will start on Monday, Apr. 27 and finish by Friday, May 1, and residents should avoid lanes marked with white PVC poles.  FOX Wilmington
  • About 200 customers in downtown Wilmington will face a boil water advisory starting Tuesday, Apr. 28 at 7 p.m. as CFPUA repairs broken valves — residents must boil water for one minute before use until water tests lift the advisory.  FOX Wilmington

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wilmington Health has broken ground today on Midtown II, a new 64,000-sqft medical office building on Gallery Park Drive adjacent to its Midtown campus designed to expand healthcare access in southeastern North Carolina. Construction will take about 15 months, with completion expected in 2027.  WWAY

  • Yelp has highlighted hidden gem spots for outdoor dining in Wilmington, including Indochine (with its tropical garden) and Michael’s on the Waterfront with Riverwalk views, offering local options for al fresco meals today when the beaches are busy.  Wilmington Star-News
