  • Wilmington earned a spot on Livability’s Top 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S. for its high scores in transportation, housing and education. Livability evaluated nearly 100 data points such as the economy, amenities + safety to rank small- to medium-sized cities.  Wilmington Star-News
  • At Ogden Park nearly 25 food trucks gathered for the annual Food Truck Rodeo organized by the Parks Conservancy of New Hanover County to raise funds for an accessible pump track at Northern Regional Park.   • Two suspects were arrested after a pursuit ended in a crash at the entrance of the Landsdowne neighborhood on Sunday, April 27 when officers responded to a suspect fleeing a traffic stop and who later fled on foot (police report no public threat).  WECT

  • The 11th annual Wilmington Jewish Film Fest began Sunday at Thalian Hall and will end next Tuesday—showing six films on topics like a Holocaust drama, a biography of the Beatles’ manager and a comedy—bringing Jewish culture to Wilmington audiences.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voting is open for StarNews Student of the Week until 11 a.m. on May 1 — nominees include students from Ashley High, Cape Fear Academy, New Hanover, and SEA-Tech recognized for academic, athletic, and community service achievements. The winner will be announced on May 2 — educators submitted detailed nominations highlighting key accomplishments and community impact.  Wilmington Star-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Carolina Rip Current Awareness Week began on Sunday as National Weather Service stations along the Carolinas shared tips on rip currents and beach safety — Oak Island Water Rescue Chief Terry Hoben explained that flat water interrupted by incoming waves can signal a dangerous rip current — and some towns have placed flotation devices near beach access points to aid in rescues.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A New Hanover nonprofit Alliance for Cape Fear Trees had its $100,000 grant frozen because federal cuts targeted DEI programs and it is fighting to restore funding for hiring a community engagement coordinator. The grant was meant to help expand tree planting in underserved neighborhoods and the group is seeking other funding while the dispute continues.  Wilmington Star-News
