- ➤ The new spring issue of Edible Port City is free for pick-up at select Wilmington locations, as publisher Eileen Duffy spotlights local sustainable food practices and introduces recipe columnist Laura Paluch (who offers a pea and radish risotto). EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ New Hanover County Schools will offer free summer to-go meal packs through the USDA SUN Meals To-Go program for children 18 and under and eligible adults. Families may pick up meal packs at Holly Shelter Middle School on Thursdays from noon to 7 p.m. from June 18 to Aug. 6; pre-orders are due by May 8. WECT
- ➤ New Hanover County Schools launches a free SUN Meals To-Go program to provide nutritious summer meal packs for youth (open to all students). Families must sign up by May 8 as meal pickups occur weekly on Thursdays at Holly Shelter Middle School from June 18 through August 6. WWAY
- ➤ Cape Fear Community College will launch an Associate in Applied Science in Aviation Management and Career Pilot Technology this fall to prepare students for aviation careers. The program offers in-person + online classes and is accepting applications now. WWAY
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Cape Fear River winds past downtown Wilmington, offering scenic views from landmarks like the S. Thomas Rhodes Bridge. Its 191-mile stretch connects the city with the Atlantic Ocean. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ State officials held a final PFAS public hearing last week at Wilmington City Hall’s Skyline Center, where many residents opposed proposed rules that lack enforceable limits for industrial dischargers. Written comments remain open until June 15 to allow more local voices to be heard. WHQR

- ➤ Dozens of high school students from Wilmington join a statewide push for stronger nicotine laws and will meet with Raleigh lawmakers tomorrow to support House Bill 430, which raises the tobacco sales age to 21. - ➤ Rip Current Awareness Week runs April 26-May 2 and reminds Wilmington beachgoers to follow NWS tips like staying calm and swimming across the current to avoid dangerous flows. The NWS highlights rip currents as a top safety risk along our coast. WECT
- ➤ North Carolina recorded its lowest historic infant mortality rate in 2024 as the rate dropped from 6.9 to 6.3 deaths per 1,000 live births, and overdose fatalities also fell sharply due to state health investments. WECT
