COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, United Way of Cape Fear Area hosted its spring trike race at The Eagle’s Dare, where teams raced tricycles in costume and competed for a $500 donation prize and a $250 bonus for team spirit—funds which will benefit over 40 local nonprofits.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 24th North Carolina Black Film Festival starts Friday in Wilmington, showcasing shorts, animations, documentaries, and family films at local venues through Sunday, May 3. It will feature a youth film block and the Donna Green Award to 11-year-old Imani Summer for her film The Babysitters v.s. The Cookie Monsters.  WECT
  • Comedian Ali Siddiq will perform two shows at the Wilson Center on May 2; the 7 p.m. show is sold out and tickets remain for the 4 p.m. set. Siddiq (winner of the NAACP Image Award for My Two Sons) urges fans to arrive on time for his storytelling experience.  WECT
  • Comedian Dan Mintz (the voice actor behind Tina Belcher on Bob’s Burgers) will tour Wilmington on May 1 and 2 at Dead Crow Comedy Room as part of his Well Rounded Entertainer tour; he will also preview his animated special debuting on YouTube on May 20.  Port City Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rising 9th to 12th graders can sign up for Wilmington Fire Department’s free Junior Fire Academy, offering hands-on fire safety training. Sessions run June 22 to 26 and July 27 to 31 at WFD Headquarters (801 Market Street) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Fridays ending at 12 p.m.  WWAY
  • Cape Fear Community College has added student success rates to instructor evaluations this academic year, causing some teachers to worry about easier coursework and grade inflation (they claim the change lowers standards), while the college says the metric is one part of an overall review that also gauges student progress.  WHQR
  • A new NEA report shows North Carolina ranking near the bottom in per-pupil spending and teacher pay, with educators earning $16,500 less than the national average. Educators will rally at the state legislative building in Raleigh on Friday, May 1 — they plan to demand fairer wages and better funding.  Port City Daily
  • Cape Fear Community College launches a 10-week commercial craft brewing program designed for entry-level industry workers, with classes starting June 1 through Aug. 10. Instruction is held at the downtown campus + local breweries.  WWAY
  • Kevin Blackburn, the executive director of Kids Making It, runs an afterschool woodworking workshop on Castle Street where local teens build skills and confidence by creating and selling projects. The program supports nearly 950 students each year and boasts a 100 percent high school graduation rate.  WWAY

  • Brunswick Regional Water and Sewer H2GO is urging customers to reduce water use after severe drought in Brunswick and surrounding counties nearly forced mandatory conservation in April—officials advise checking irrigation systems for leaks and watering only between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. to conserve water.  FOX Wilmington
