COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 60 cyclists stopped at the Wilmington Police Department (WPD) on Tuesday, May 5 to honor fallen officers by reading names on the Memorial Wall; they began their ride in Little River and planned to reach Jacksonville by evening.  FOX Wilmington
  • Local law enforcement officers will trade badges for running shoes on May 21 at the UNC Wilmington campus amphitheater to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics athletes (registration starts at 9 a.m., and participants can complete a one-mile loop multiple times between 10 a.m. and noon).  WECT
  • The Landfall Foundation hosted its 2026 gala Friday in Wilmington — raising over $460,000 for local nonprofits and schools. The Cinco de Mayo celebration featured live music and entertainment to support projects in health, education and the arts.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, Wilmington hosts a rich lineup of film screenings, concerts, and live theater with events at Thalian Hall, the Marina District, and Belville Riverwalk Park — inviting residents to explore everything from free community screenings to tribute shows.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Former Wilmington writer Daniel Kraus, a former WECT cameraman & local contributor, won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his 2025 novel 'Angel Down', announced May 4. His win highlights a creative career that began right here in our community.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CFCC has launched an apprenticeship program with Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (using a competency-based model with mentor supervision) to prepare students for high-demand careers.  FOX Wilmington
  • The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and DREAMS Center for Arts Education partnered with musician Ben Folds to launch Keys for Kids, a program that provides afterschool lessons plus youth performance opportunities. A benefit concert on May 30 at Martin Marietta Center in Raleigh will support the initiative.  Port City Daily
  • Brunswick Community College announced its 2026 commencement ceremonies on Tuesday, May 5 — the college has set the event for future dates as it finalizes details for graduates.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Orton conducted a permitted prescribed burn on 565 acres Tuesday to improve forest health and restore longleaf pine habitat in the Wilmington area — experienced fire professionals oversaw the operation from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.  WWAY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Acme Art Studios, a notable art center in downtown, was listed for $4.4 million on May 5 with a one-acre complex including a 12,000 sqft warehouse + four vacant lots. The site, home to around 20 artists through November, is seen as key to the Brooklyn Arts District's creative legacy.  Wilmington Star-News
