CRIME NEWS

  • Two Leland residents, Tyler Collins and Austin Ziglar, were charged with first degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon after 63-year-old Cedric Adkins was found dead in a Wilmington wooded area on May 2, and they appeared in court on May 6 before Judge Richard Russell Davis and are held without bond.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Late Monday night, Wilmington police arrested 24-year-old Isaac Guy Debrosse near South College Road for a fatal vehicle versus pedestrian collision—he faces felony hit and run charges for causing serious injury or death and is held on a $50,000 secured bond.  WWAY

  • Teacher Ashley Castillo at Wilmington Preparatory Academy plans to host a dance called A Night in Paris in the school gym to honor her students’ hard work on test prep + after-school tutoring, and she is asking for donations on DonorsChoose + with matching funds since May 6 to cover $394 in party supplies with only $197 needed.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials with the N.C. Forest Service said that as of May 6 the wildfire in Boiling Spring Lakes covered 1,331 acres and was 15% contained. Crews used drone infrared tech (to spot remaining heat) to reinforce fire lines, and today's warm, dry weather will likely boost fire activity in areas with abundant heat.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A large agrochemical company helped add a part to the North Carolina Farm Act that would let pesticide makers skip extra warnings if their products carry EPA and state board approval—Sen. Brent Jackson sponsored the measure and the Senate Judiciary Committee will review it on Tuesday. Critics, including Toxic Free NC, warned the law could give too much legal protection while Bayer has already paid billions over its Roundup product.  Port City Daily
