COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher in Kure Beach will close to the public in the fall for a $65 million renovation that will add the state’s largest shark habitat — an interactive touch pool, live coral reef habitat, education center and rooftop sky deck. The first phase will launch later in 2025 and state funds along with contributions from the New Hanover Community Endowment and State Employees Credit Union Foundation support the project.  Wilmington Star-News

CRIME NEWS

  • Hackers sent extortion emails after a massive data breach exposed sensitive information and officials confirmed that New Hanover County was not affected—law enforcement and education leaders are investigating and set a meeting on May 22 to improve data safeguards.  FOX Wilmington
  • Wilmington Police arrested 27-year-old Dylan Inman near Hurst Street on May 2 in connection with the stabbing that killed Cedric Adkins and are still searching for 30-year-old Marissa Reynolds (do not approach her and if seen, call 911 immediately).  WECT
  • Wilmington Police captured 27-year-old Dylan Inman on May 8th after a brief foot chase during a homicide investigation near Hurst and Clay Street — authorities are still searching for 30-year-old suspect Marissa Reynolds.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The NC Coastal Land Trust completed the purchase of 'The Point' at the southern tip of Topsail Island—this 150-acre parcel with soundside, uplands and beach areas will be turned over to the state and managed as a nature reserve to protect it from future development, similar to Masonboro Island.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The North Carolina House passed HB 569, a PFAS-liability bill written by Rep. Ted Davis to require PFAS manufacturer Chemours to pay for water cleanups after discharging chemicals, by a vote of 104-3 on May 7th. The bill now moves to the Senate and is aimed at lessening the burden on ratepayers facing rising bills for PFAS removal.  WHQR
  • Wilmington City Council proposed a budget cutting the mounted police unit, which costs $351,656, because the horses are seen as nonessential—if cut, officers will be reassigned and unused equipment sold. The plan also ends most city-wide concessions programs, saving $105,046 to boost officer recruitment and fund regular firefighter cancer screenings if approved.  WECT
  • Wilmington International Airport released a statement in response to a FAA complaint by Cape Fear Coastal Aviation after a lease termination issue with a tenant — the airport said it provided alternative arrangements for aircraft storage and maintained ramp access while insisting that new site plans meet FAA safety guidelines.  WWAY
