  • Neighbors gathered at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery to lay WWII sailor William Robert Burns to rest, honoring his service after he was killed during the D-Day invasion on June 8, 1944 (he served on the USS Glennon and received full military honors).  WECT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In May 1983, Babcock & Wilcox closed its Wilmington plant, cutting 660 jobs and ending a post-WWII boost for local industry. Former workers have held reunions to reconnect over the plant’s lasting impact.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Wilmington’s famous signs showcase the city’s pride—residents see markers on College Road, near the Cotton Exchange, and on Market Street that trace local history from cotton exports to modern retail while reminding them of evolving landmarks.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Smart Start of New Hanover County (a local nonprofit) hosted its annual Children's Champions Awards to honor local supporters who work to boost children's well-being in the region. The event highlighted those who make a lasting difference for kids.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The University of North Carolina Wilmington held a graduation ceremony for the Cameron School of Business at Trask Coliseum on May 9 — entrepreneur Howard Stein gifted $500 to each of the 627 graduates, earning a standing ovation as university leaders addressed the event.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Graduation ceremonies for the class of 2026 begin Saturday, June 6 at Trask Coliseum in New Hanover County, with additional events scheduled in Brunswick and Pender counties from May 15 to June 5.
