- ➤ Multiple Memorial Day events will honor veterans in Wilmington during the week. Ceremonies are set for May 16, 17 and 19 at Veterans Memorial Reef, with additional public events on May 23 in Surf City and May 26 at Battleship North Carolina, Wilmington National Cemetery and Sunset Beach Town Park. - ➤ The Wilmington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta built a home in Castle Hayne on Saturday as part of their 85th anniversary service in partnership with Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity under the Women Build program. They helped a first-time homeowner start a new chapter and will celebrate with an 85th Gala Celebration event on Friday, May 23 at Cape Fear Community College—continuing their commitment to service. - ➤ Avelo Airlines, which opened a new operating base in Wilmington last month, signed a deal with ICE and will begin transporting detained migrants to ICE detention centers starting May 12—immigration advocates protested the deal at Wilmington International Airport. Organizer Wesley Magruder said the group plans to hold weekly demonstrations and will join a larger campaign on May 31—hoping to persuade the airline to drop the contract. WHQR

- ➤ A disagreement at Wilmington International Airport has put a $90M plan to build a private-aircraft base in trouble as ARQ stopped its plans after ILM said the hangar doors did not follow FAA rules— CFCA and ARQ asked the court for help while Modern Aviation ended a flight school lease early. The fight has delayed work and made people worry about the future of private aviation at the airport. Port City Daily
- ➤ In 2014, Vertex Rail Technologies opened a plant in Wilmington with plans to create over 1,300 jobs but faced setbacks that led to few hires and its closure in 2018—today, the former facility is leased by SANY America, which plans to hire 50 workers— and is accepting applications. - ➤ On Saturday, the North Carolina Forest Service announced the Sunset Road fire in Boiling Spring Lakes reached 74% containment after Friday’s 0.4 inch rain helped ease hot spots. Firefighters continued cleanup work while a drone with infrared technology — checking for lingering heat — flew over the area. WECT
- ➤ Fewer than a dozen North Atlantic right whales were born along the NC coast this season, the fewest since 2020, and their overall number remains around 370. The low calf count raises concerns as ship strikes, fishing gear entanglements and warming waters continue to threaten this endangered species. Wilmington Star-News
