CULTURE NEWS

  • Two legacy concerts are set at the Wilson Center to celebrate decades of stardom. Three Dog Night will perform on Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. with special guests Ambrosia & John Ford Coley while Il Divo will honor co-founder Carlos Marín on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.; tickets for members go on sale today at 10 a.m. and for the public on May 16 at 10 a.m.  WECT
  • ‘Solidarity Now! 1968 Poor People’s Campaign’ is on display at the Cape Fear Museum and will be available through Aug. 31, offering visitors a look at the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign.  WECT
  • Kaleo will perform at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on September 20 as part of their Mixed Emotions Tour with special guests Stephen Day & JUNIUS. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, May 16 at 10 a.m.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews from the North Carolina Forest Service left the area Tuesday after helping contain the Sunset Road fire in Boiling Spring Lakes, which remains at 83% containment—rain helped reduce hot spots and local teams then took over monitoring the fire.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The renourishment project for Carolina and Kure Beaches is delayed another year after the only bid came in at double the expected cost—USACE has awarded a $23.52 million contract to Norfolk Dredging Company for work from November 16 to April 30. Town officials noted that while most of the beach remains in good shape, extra sand is needed to help reduce erosion and storm damage risks.  WECT
  • The NCDOT will dedicate the newly constructed Old Lake Road overpass near Lake Waccamaw to the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe on Saturday, May 17th at 2:00 p.m. + A state bill directed this naming + the bridge replaced a conflict intersection as part of a $44 million project.  WWAY
  • A bill in the state legislature aims to limit HOA power by capping fines, banning foreclosures for unpaid fines, and preventing fines on home businesses. It passed the Senate 47-0 last week and now moves to a House committee for further review—supporters stress that well-run HOAs have nothing to fear.  WWAY
