  • A local nonprofit donated pet oxygen masks to the Wilmington Fire Department on May 14 (10:20 a.m. EDT) to help save animal lives during emergencies. The donation boosts the department’s tools for handling animal-related incidents.  WECT

CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington Police Department is searching for 31-year-old Emerson Sky Weems-Collins (6 feet tall, weighing about 250-280 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes, last seen on Van Campen Boulevard) and anyone with tips is asked to call (910-343-3609).  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 29th Annual Orange Street ArtsFest returns this month and will feature 79 artists—juried by award-winning artist Benjamin Billingsley.  WECT
  • This weekend, Wilmington offers many events with festivals, concerts, and art shows including the Greek Festival from May 16-18 and the musical Legally Blonde at Thalian Association Community Theatre. ECONOMY NEWS

  • CFPUA customers will see their water and sewer bills increase by 6.9% (an extra $5.12 per month) starting July 1 as the utility raises its operating budget by 7.8% to $129.35 million. The rate hike will fund a $400 million project to replace and expand the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant on River Road, with construction set for late 2025 or early 2026.  Port City Daily

  • Heavy rain in recent days caused flooding at Wilmington’s Municipal Golf Course, and a course worker said the unusual water buildup was not seen even during hurricanes + reports show that minor flooding along HWY 210 in Surf City has since receded.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Hanover County’s Veterans Treatment Court program offers eligible veterans charged with low-level, non-violent offenses a voluntary alternative that links them with treatment and VA support under judicial oversight. District Attorney Jason Smith said three veterans have graduated since the program launched in 2022—helping to reduce further community harm.  WWAY
  • The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Carolina Beach’s State of the Town meeting on May 19 at 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (Community Life Center Building), where speakers including UNCW’s Dr. Mouchine Guettabi, Town Manager Bruce Oakley, and Mayor Lynn Barbee will address local issues (a Q&A session will follow).  WECT
