  • Jolene, a young coonhound from Monty's Home, is still looking for her forever home in Burgaw. She loves affection and is fully trained (she completed training with an inmate at Pender Correctional Center last November) and does well with other dogs and strangers but should not be in a home with cats.  WECT

CRIME NEWS

  • Alyssa Garcia returned to her Creekwood apartment last month to find it empty after maintenance staff removed all her belongings—including her baby's cremated remains—and the Wilmington Housing Authority later said it was a mistake while claiming she was subletting the unit.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The cult classic Napoleon Dynamite will be celebrated on May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilson Center with a full film screening and an unscripted discussion featuring Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez, and Jon Gries. Families can expect live improv, audience games and surprise moments—fans are invited to dress up— as part of the 20th anniversary celebration.  WWAY
  • The 33rd annual Wilmington Greek Festival is underway at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, offering Greek food, music, vendors and a drive-thru option that began Friday and continues through Sunday afternoon—proceeds benefit The Good Shepherd Center and The Bread for Life Senior Pantry.  WWAY

  • Novant Health and NCWorks will host a three-county job fair next week with open interviews for nurse aides, care associates, paramedics and pharmacy techs – interviews will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20 at Brunswick County NCWorks Career Center, Wednesday, May 21 at Pender County Medical Center and Thursday, May 22 at New Hanover NCWorks Career Center.  WECT

  • UNCW’s clinical psychology doctoral program received full accreditation from the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation after meeting rigorous training standards—faculty said the recognition is expected to double annual applications and strengthen clinical training opportunities.  University of North Carolina Wilmington

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State and local officials visited Masonboro Island on May 16 to review its role in protecting coastal communities from flooding and to support sea turtle nest research with UNC Wilmington. The 8.4-mile island—one of the last defenses against storms—continues to be a vital resource amid growing state challenges.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The North Carolina Department of Labor has launched a new website for human trafficking prevention that will require all lodging and vacation rental managers to complete biannual training in housekeeping, guest check in and check out, and food or beverage service beginning July 1. The department said the training will help staff spot signs of human trafficking.  WECT
  • Earlier this week, NCDOT told Leland Town Council that tolling may be needed to fund the new Cape Fear Memorial Bridge since a $242 million federal grant is uncertain and the project may cost over $1 billion; councilmembers decried tolling as a regressive tax+WMPO will vote on the measure on May 28+they urged state and federal lawmakers to provide additional funds.  WECT
